Peng’s Fun With Chinese Characters for Children. Help your child learn Chinese the fun way
This little paperback book with its 144 pages and it small format, slightly bigger than A5 (A5 is hald the size of a stnadard A4 Photocopy paper used in many home inkjet printers) is quite interesting. It provide the Chinese Pictograms (those of you who already know Japanese will tend to call them Kanji) as well as their transliteration in the Latin (or if you prefer English) alphabet that Chinese call ‘pinyin’.

There are over 120 Chinese characters (pictograms/kanji) that are useful for anyone learning Chinese. There are a lot of black and white (grayschale) drawing that help the learner memorize the complex Chinese characters. Although this small book is aimed at children any adult will find it useful especially those who rely on their visual memory. The richness of the drawing make them culturally interesting because they tend to wear traditional Chinese dresses.

This book help to learn how to write and read some of the most useful nouns and verbs.
People who learn Chinese are aware that it is a tonal language, the standard Mandarin (national) version has 4 tones and is written with simplified characters. Other Chinese dialects, such as Cantonese has even more tones, some people say between 7 and 9 tones. Just like in English when we change the tone of a sentence we can modify its meaning in Chinese each Pictograms has, as far as I am aware, 4 tones in Mandarin Chinese each tone has a different meaning.

If you want to learn how to write or read Chinese characters this book represent an excellent introduction, and since it is aimed at children most adult will find it interesting too with its beatiful illustrations.
